We had a fabulous time exhibiting at The Great Yorkshire Show with the rest of the gang of Meet the Farmer. We show cased our fresh produce, which included our speciality herbs, micro herbs and edible flowers. The GYS visitors had the opportunity to sample all the herbs and flowers and we had great feedback.

 

The Meet the Farmer happens every year, we’re they’re to promote Yorkshire Farming and for the public to have the opportunity to find more about our businesses and the process of field to fork for all our products.

We had some lovely feedback including the following email from Bev ‘ Your stand at the GYS was our best experience of the day. The lovely lady who spoke to us & let us sample things was brilliant. Never tasted flowers before, what a brilliant experience. Fascinating, what a great stall to stop at. Thank you ‘

A super few days, meeting lots of fellow food and drink producers and meeting lots of new people who were generally interested in our story and produce.

Pesto
Pesto is a great way to use up extra herbs, its easy to make too if you have a food processor. Most pesto’s are made with fresh Basil but you can also use other leafy herbs and kale too.

Recipe
1 clove garlic
2 cups of Basil and leafy herbs
½ cup of pine nuts
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup Olive Oil

Add all the ingredients into a food processor, store in a sealed glass jar to make it last longer.

Tip – Try Lemon Verbena to add a twist on a traditional Pesto and to add a zesty flavour

Freeze Herbs into Olive Oil Ice Cubes

Why not have a flavour boost at the tip of your fingers by popping some herbs into ice cubes with olive oil. This works best with the tougher herbs like Rosemary, Thyme, Sage, Mint, Curly Parsley and chives. You can then just add a cube from the freezer to add some extra flavour to your dishes.

Infused Oils
Herbs are great to infuse flavour into oil, if you wash the herbs and then make sure they are completely dry before they are added into the bottle of olive oil. Sit the oil in a cool dark place for a couple weeks and then you have got a flavoursome drizzle of oil for salad, bread, bruschetta etc

Flavoured Butter

Why not make your own flavoured to make your own garlic bread or just as a nice tasty toasted baguette topper? You need to combine crushed garlic with softened butter and your chosen herb. Roll out into sausage shape and then cut into slices

The evening of the awards was a fantastic event, with so many food and drink producers in attendance from the region, lots of new faces too which was great. We had a table with our friends from Herb Fed Poultry and waited in anticipation for our category.
Finally, our category was called out by the lovely Nigel Barden ‘The winner for the Best Produce Category is Herbs Unlimited!’. Wow we were so pleased, our baby speciality salad box had won first prize which we had launched that year. Presented by our lovely friend Steph Moon who is a great supporter of ours and a fantastic chef!
The judge’s comments were that they were impressed with the quality of all the shortlisted products, but the winner was a standout for the judge with fresh, vibrant, crisp and a perfectly judged combination of flavours. For something so simple to deliver on so many levels was impressive.
A great night had by all and super proud of our award!

Our British grown kale is now in season and available to buy in single variety 1kg or mixed variety 2kg boxes.  We have green, white, purple, white and cavolo nero varieties along with our Kalettes which have become very popular! We have also just launched a chopped green and purple kale available in 100g and 250g bags.

This versatile brassica, from the cabbage family is rightly known as a superfood being virtually fat free and rich in folic acid and the anti-oxidant lutein as well as vitamins A, K & C.  It’s high calcium content is also good news for vegans and dairy free diets too.

Kale can be used in a wide range of dishes, from stir frying to boiling or steaming and also raw in smoothies and salads.   This versatility lends itself to many cuisines including Italian and Asian inspired dishes.

Favourite quick and easy to cook kale tips:

For a healthy nutrient rich snack, drizzle kale with extra virgin olive oil, add some sea salt and bake in the oven until crispy and dry.

Heat the oil in a large wok, then add 200g kale and a couple tbsp water. Season, then stir-fry for 5-8 mins, adding 2 cloves of garlic and a sliced and de-seeded chilli for the final 2 mins. When the kale is tender and a vibrant green, remove from the heat and serve as a delicious side dish.

Wow, what a fantastic Open Day! Thank you to everyone who joined us and a huge thank you to Stephanie Moon, Josh Whitehead from Harewood Food & Drink & Nick Brown, Development Chef from The Black Swan at Oldstead who made some fantastic dishes showcasing our speciality herbs. Even though the weather wasn’t brilliant it didn’t spoil the day! It was great to see so many of our wholesale and manufacturing costumers along with a fantastic crowd of chefs join us, I hope you enjoyed the day as much as we did!

We started off with welcome drinks from Chris & Rose Bax from Bax Botanics who served their Lemon Verbena with our fresh Lemon Verbena & Sea Buckthorn served with our Marigold & Tagete edible flowers. So a huge thank you to them!
We then had 3 tours; speciality salad tunnel, speciality herbs in the greenhouse & a tractor tour around the fields which was a little chilly! Followed by a delicious menu of food showcasing our speciality herbs.
